BREASTFEEDING FOR DOULAS

This half day intensive is designed for the new doula or doula-in-training to meet the breastfeeding class requirement for their doula certification.  This is a breastfeeding basics workshop for the new birth and/or postpartum doula and is not designed for experienced doulas or those who have taken additional breastfeeding support courses such as the CLC or CBS.  Doulas will leave this workshop feeling more confident helping new families who want to breastfeed while being supportive and empathetic to those who are not sure or do not want to breastfeed but still need additional support in the early days.

Topics covered may include but not be limited to:

â€¢    Supporting breastfeeding prior to labor

â€¢    Anatomy and physiology of the breastfeeding dyad

â€¢    Birth and immediate postpartum practices that impact breastfeeding

â€¢    How the birth doula can provide support breastfeeding immediately after birth

â€¢    How the postpartum doula can support in the weeks and months after birth

    â€¢    Common complications of breastfeeding

â€¢    Hands on demonstration with various pumps

â€¢    This workshop may include a new mother and baby for demonstration purposes. TBD.

Please bring snacks, water bottles, something for note taking and a sweater or shawl.  NO SLIDES provided.

This workshop is facilitated by Jen Kowal RLC, IBCLC. Jen began supporting families as a birth and postpartum doula in 2003 and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

LACTATION LOVE + LEARNING
(IBCLC support group)

Lactation Love + Learning is a professional support and case study group for IBCLCs and their Associates/Students. We gather for peer support, connection, networking as well as enriching our practices with learning opportunities provided by your colleagues. Each session will include a guest speaker, a case study or a "hot topic"- as well as time to get to know your fellow NJ IBCLCs and IBCLC associates/students.

All fees go to supporting the PERINATAL HEALTH EQUITY INITIATIVE (PHEI)- closing the gap in racial inequities for NJ's black mothers and babies in pregnancy and postpartum. Funds pay for speakers, space rental, and other expenses. Remaining proceeds all go to PHEI.

PEER MENTORSHIP

Peer mentorship exists to fill the gap that naturally arises between passing the board exams and the experience that comes from being in practice for any extended period of time.  We all find we need someone to review cases with from time to time for perspective, additional ideas or solutions that come from experience or simply validation that things are going as well as they can.  Peer mentorship is available as an individual session or in packages.  I want you to feel supported and to learn to trust your clinical judgements and intuition. Individual sessions are currently $275 for 60 minutes and can be broken into 2 30 minute sessions. We can do case review or be more topic specific.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION

At Milkwell® we believe in supporting the next generation of lactation consultants. When we have a comfortable environment that nurtures our skills and gifts, we are open and receptive to learning. Clinical supervision is available for lactation professionals who desire to sit the board exam by The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, or IBLCE.  This opportunity allows you to move through the phases of supervision while addressing the Clinical Competencies and items from Detailed Content Outline preparing you to sit the exam. You will observe consultations run by an experienced IBCLC, work with families together with your preceptor learning hands on skills, deepen your counseling skills and gain valuable face to face time with families running consults and creating care plans on your own with your preceptor either at your side or on site for support when needed. Learning to take a history, counseling towards client goals, documentation, creation of care plans and making referrals are all covered.

All 95 lactation specific hours must be completed prior to commencing supervision. Space is limited.  Fees apply.  Please be familiar with IBLCE's Pathways prior to completing the form below to apply.
